The City Legacy consortium will be delivering the City Legacy Homes development, the first phase of which will be used for the Athletes’ Village at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Around 50 sub-contracts will be advertised over the next few weeks and are available to companies who are registered and ‘Business Ready’ on the portal.
Amongst the many opportunities are solar photovoltaic cell installation, plumbing and heating works, internal and external door sets, roofing works and timber windows.
Businesses interested in supplying services for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games should visit www.glasgow2014.com/businessportal.
The portal is an online business networking and matching service that will publish both public and private sector Games-related contract opportunities. Hundreds of millions of pounds of contracts will be available through the Portal.
The successful delivery of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will require a huge number of goods, works and services from firms of all sizes. To help make this part of the delivery as smooth as possible, the Commonwealth Games Business Portal was created.
Examples of these goods, works and services include everything from service contracts like catering and security to massive construction projects. Companies of all sizes can compete for Games-related contracts.
Firms that wish to be considered for Games-related contracts must pre-register their details and complete the ‘Business Readiness’ questionnaire successfully. This is done through a straightforward, free, online process that should take no longer than 10 minutes. To be registered as ‘Business Ready’ an organisation must provide details on Health and Safety Policy, Quality Policy and other key elements.
There are a number of reasons why firms should pre-register: First, to get advance notice of tender opportunities, once registered you will be sent an automatic alert when an opportunity is posted that matches your requirements. Secondly, you only have to register once for all opportunities related to 2014, the Portal retains your business profile. Thirdly, information on areas such as health and safety and insurance can be collected. Finally, to ensure businesses can get in place the requirements necessary to be matched with and considered for opportunities - in time.
It is expected that the portal will benefit businesses by helping firms to develop their business networks, providing buyers with the widest possible network to engage with a diverse supply chain, giving access to business support networks and identifying potential partners for the formation of an onward supply chain. In addition, by bidding for contracts and receiving feedback, companies will be in a better position to bid for future opportunities. To ensure the highest possible business performance, it is necessary to ensure that as many firms as possible can compete for contracts.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “In challenging economic circumstances, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games continues to provide an enormous range of opportunities for businesses in the city and Scotland, and I would urge interested companies and organisations to register their interest in the City Legacy Homes project. I am confident that the city’s firms will show the world what they can do to help deliver a memorable Games for Glasgow.”
Glasgow 2014’s Head of Procurement, David Brown, said: “Hosting the Commonwealth Games will bring a significant boost to the local economy so it’s vital that we have an open and transparent process for companies to compete for contracts. Glasgow 2014 is committed to working with our partners at Glasgow City Council to achieve the maximum efficiency, effectiveness and value for money in the acquisition of goods, services and works. The Business Portal is the latest innovation in ensuring we maintain ‘best practice’ procurement processes and rigorous quality operational standards.”
Ed Monaghan, spokesperson for City Legacy Homes, said: "City Legacy Homes is proud to be part of building a lasting legacy for the East End and bringing job opportunities into the area. Through the Business Portal, small and medium sized companies now have the opportunity to become part of the exciting Athletes' Village development as we create new jobs and apprenticeships with these sub-contractors."
The Commonwealth Games Business Portal has been developed by Glasgow City Council, in partnership with Glasgow 2014, the Organising Committee for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
It should also be noted that businesses can use the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Business Portal to access all Glasgow City Council contracts. There have been more than 15,500 registrations on the Portal.
