Glasgow’s East End has a history which is thriving in tradition and culture.

The East End starts at the city’s ancient heart and covers a dense residential area with hidden gems worth seeking out. The People’s Palace museum on the historic Glasgow Green documents the story of Glasgow’s people whilst close by the famous and lively Glasgow Barras market remains the city’s largest and most popular weekend market.

The East End of Glasgow has traditionally been a very industrial and productive area and Dalmarnock is no exception to this. Since the 19th century Dalmarnock was the site of extensive engineering works for Sir William Arrol & Co at Dunn St and Baltic Street.

From its beginnings in boiler making, the firm later became renowned for its achievements in the field of structural engineering, including well know bridges like the Forth Railway and Road Bridges, the Humber Bridge and London’s Tower Bridge. The company was eventually taken over by a Gateshead based engineering firm and the Dalmarnock Works closed in 1986.

There was also a large coal fired power station located near Dalmarnock Bridge. It was built by Glasgow Corporation in two stages, with phase one opening in 1920 and phase two in 1926. It was closed in 1977.

The east side of Summerfield Street was bombed during the Second World War. Most of the Victorian red-sandstone tenements on Dalmarnock Road and Springfield Road were demolished in the 1960s and early 1970s, although some were renovated. A new housing scheme was built in the 1960s.  This included four 22 storey tower blocks and 'H-block' maisionettes.
